GERSTEL AutoTwister & Twister SBSE System

Fully automated SBSE for maximum sensitivity, reproducibility, and lab efficiency

Efficiently extracting trace organic compounds from aqueous samples is a challenge. While Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) using the GERSTEL Twister® is known for its exceptional sensitivity and solvent free operation, traditional workflows still rely on manual steps that can limit throughput and introduce variability.

The GERSTEL AutoTwister takes this technology to the next level by delivering a fully automated SBSE workflow from sample preparation to GC MS analysis. By eliminating manual handling, it ensures consistent, high quality results while significantly reducing analyst workload.

Fully Automated SBSE for Reliable Trace Analysis

Its large sorbent volume enables solvent free enrichment of analytes from liquid or gaseous samples, making GERSTEL Twister® ideal for trace analysis. The reusable, glass coated magnetic stir bar with an adsorbent layer is placed in the sample and stirred to extract target compounds. After enrichment, it is removed, dried, and placed in a thermal desorption tube for TDU 2 analysis.

The AutoTwister builds on this foundation with seamless automation, improving reproducibility, analyte recovery, and limits of quantification while maintaining the benefits of solvent free extraction.

With the AutoTwister, laboratories can move beyond manual handling and benefit from a seamless, integrated process. Samples are automatically handled, extracted, cleaned, and introduced into the GC-MS system without intervention:

  1. The sample is placed in a vial, sealed, and loaded into the MultiPurpose Sampler (MPS) tray.
  2. The MPS automatically inserts the designated AutoTwister rod into the sample.
  3. The vial is automatically transferred to the quickMIX module, where high‑energy agitation enables efficient analyte extraction.
  4. The AutoTwister rod is cleaned in a dedicated Wash & Dry station, where matrix residues are automatically removed.
  5. The rod is then rapidly dried through high‑speed rotation in the integrated drying station.
  6. Finally, the MPS transfers the AutoTwister rod to the TDU 2 for automated thermal desorption and direct GC‑MS analysis.
