GC-VUV ASTM D8519 Application for the Analysis of Waste Plastic Pyrolysis Oil
Accurately characterizing waste plastic pyrolysis oil (WPPO) has long been a challenge for producers and testing laboratories. Traditional methods such as DHA, SIMDIST, NMR, and GC-MS provide useful data, but none are able to deliver a complete picture of WPPO composition.
The new ASTM D8519-23 method changes that. By applying Gas Chromatography with Vacuum Ultraviolet Absorption Spectroscopy (GC-VUV), it provides a single, standardized solution for reliable identification and quantification of hydrocarbons in WPPO, from C4 through C30+. This enables producers, users, and labs to finally align on consistent, reproducible data.
Da Vinci Laboratory Solutions supports this breakthrough with a dedicated PIONA-VUV application developed by VUV Analytics, that includes a proprietary modified spectral library and PIONA+ software. Together, these tools ensure accurate identification and quantification of WPPO composition, helping laboratories adopt the ASTM D8519-23 method with confidence.
By enabling a more complete characterization of pyrolysis oils, ASTM D8519-23 supports the circular economy. Waste plastics can now be transformed into reliable, sustainable feedstocks—paving the way for broader acceptance and use in the chemical and energy industries.
